Theosophical business as usual despite the war
In spite
of the difficulties cause by the war Theosophists were determined to carry on.
The logistics of organizing this conference were immense. Air raids, travel
restrictions, fuel and paper shortages, displacement and the fact that many
delegates were living in exile all had to be overcome. In this letter of
February 1941 Peter Freeman makes an appeal to members to offer accommodation
while acknowledging the difficulties.

European Congress T.S.
We are
expecting a large number of Delegates from
I am
sure that you will appreciate that many of our members are not well off, and
will be unlikely to be able to attend the Congress, unless some help along
these lines is provided, particularly in these days, when hotels and travelling
are very expensive.
In
addition, many are exiled from their own countries, evacuated from our bigger
towns, or otherwise placed in the most difficult circumstances, yet are most
eager to attend and assist in our Theosophical work.
It is
hoped that every member in
Will
you kindly fill in the form at the foot, and post back to me at the earliest
possible moment, in any case by March 15th, at latest, so we may put
you in touch with a likely individual.
